Selecting Components for
Lightweight Mountain Rifle ...
If your goal is
a lightweight rifle, you must carefully consider the
components and then put together the best combination
for your needs.
We've put together the
following information to help you make your ultimate
decision. If weight isn't really a concern, put the
weight where it counts - in the barrel and in the scope.
And remember, after a hard day of hunting, ounces feel
like pounds.
Actions
Remington is our first choice for
several reasons:
- These actions are as light as any other
- They are easy to work with and very functional
- They are available, as are replacement parts, if needed
- The triggers are second to none
The following weights of full
actions (bolt, guard screws, trigger guard magazine liner,
trigger assembly, recoil lugs, follower and spring) - everything
except the barrel, stock, scope and mounts.

Barrels
Whether you are ready
to build a lightweight rifle from scratch, or just want to knock
off a few ounces from your existing rifle, the barrel is a good
place to start. The average factory barrel can be turned down
and save up to 10 ounces without giving up strength or accuracy.
Cutting a barrel back can also save weight without a significant
loss of velocity and no loss of accuracy. The average factory
barrel weighs 1/2 oz. per inch at the muzzle.
If the rifle is bedded properly, most
factory barrels will shoot efficiently. In custom barrels, we
favor stainless over chrome-moly for the simple reason that the
bore will never pit. And accuracy life is greatly extended.
Also, with stainless, the first shot out of a cold, clean barrel
is more likely to go to the proper point of impact than if shot
from a chrome-moly barrel.

Scope
Mounts
As you probably know,
there is a wide variety of ring/base combinations on the market
from which to choose. Conetrol is all steel, projectionless,
affordable and very good looking - our first choice.
If you're looking for detachable scope
mounts, Dave Talley Custom T.N.T.'s are second to none. We
suggest staying away from those mounts with the two rear windage
screws (Redfield type).
The following weights should help you
choose between the different brands.

Scopes
Brown Precision is an authorized
dealer for Zeiss and Swarovski scopes and binoculars. We can
also get Leupold scopes for those who prefer the American made
alternative.
We feel Zeiss makes one of the best
scopes on the market, but they're a little heavier than
Swarovski and Leupold, our next choices. Generally, fixed powers
are lighter than variables. The lower the power, the less the
weight.
